Overview

Nickel Alloy UNS N04400, commonly known as Monel® 400, is a high-performance nickel-copper alloy renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and versatility in demanding environments. Developed for use in aggressive conditions, it is a premier choice for industries ranging from marine engineering to chemical processing.

Composition

Monel® 400 is primarily composed of:

  • Nickel (Ni): 63–67% (provides corrosion resistance and stability)

  • Copper (Cu): 28–34% (enhances ductility and thermal conductivity)

  • Iron (Fe): ≤ 2.5%

  • Manganese (Mn): ≤ 2.0%

  • Trace elements: Carbon (C), Silicon (Si), Sulfur (S) (each ≤ 0.5%)

This balanced composition ensures resilience in both reducing and neutral environments.

Key Properties

  • Corrosion Resistance: Excels in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, alkalis, and sulfuric/hydrochloric acids under reducing conditions. Resists stress corrosion cracking and pitting.

  • Mechanical Strength: Maintains high tensile and yield strength across a wide temperature range (-150°C to 480°C).

  • Thermal Stability: Retains properties at elevated temperatures, ideal for heat exchangers.

  • Ductility: Easily fabricated into complex shapes despite its strength.

Applications

Monel® 400 is widely used in:

  • Marine Engineering: Propeller shafts, pump components, seawater valves.

  • Chemical Processing: Reactors, piping, and vessels handling acids and solvents.

  • Oil & Gas: Wellhead components, fasteners, and heat exchanger tubing.

  • Aerospace: Fuel and hydraulic systems.

  • Other Uses: Fasteners, springs, and architectural applications in corrosive atmospheres.

Fabrication Notes

  • Machining: Use sharp tools with slow speeds to avoid work-hardening; coolant recommended.

  • Welding: Employ compatible filler metals (e.g., Monel® 60) using TIG or MIG methods.

  • Forming: Anneal at 870–980°C if cold-worked extensively.

  • Cleanliness: Prevent contamination by avoiding sulfur-bearing lubricants.

Availability

Available in multiple forms:

  • Sheet/Plate (ASTM B127)

  • Bar/Wire (ASTM B164)

  • Tubing (ASTM B165)

  • Custom forgings and fittings upon request.

Safety Considerations

Standard metalworking precautions apply: ensure ventilation during machining to avoid inhalation of particulates.

Why Choose Monel® 400?

UNS N04400 offers unmatched durability in corrosive and high-stress environments, outperforming stainless steels and other alloys in specific conditions. Its blend of strength, adaptability, and longevity makes it a cost-effective solution for critical applications.

This introduction highlights Monel® 400’s key attributes, ensuring engineers and purchasers understand its value in challenging operational settings.
