2205 duplex stainless steel is the common name for the most commonly used duplex stainless steel. When the corrosion resistance of 316/316L stainless steel is not enough to meet the requirements, 2205 duplex stainless steel becomes the preferred alternative material.
Approximate composition: Contains approximately 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum, and 0.15% nitrogen (exact composition ranges may vary between EN and ASTM standards)
Design strength: Twice that of standard austenitic stainless steel.
Excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.
Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Good weldability.
Moderate impact toughness up to -80 °C.
2205 duplex stainless steel performs well in many chemical and Marine processes, where environmental conditions are harsh and beyond the limits of more common grades such as 316/316L. 2205 duplex stainless steel offers significant improvements in corrosion resistance. The increased strength can also lead to a reduction in section thickness, which means that the overall cost can be comparable to 316/316L. Resistance to stress corrosion cracking is particularly important in chemical and food processing above 50°C. Although weldability is good, manufacturers need to be trained on specific parameters to ensure welding quality.
Offshore oil and gas: used in Marine environments due to its corrosion resistance.
Chemical processing: In the chemical processing industry, for the treatment of various chemicals.
Desalination plants: used to resist corrosion in high salinity environments.
Pulp and paper: Equipment used in the pulp and paper industry.
Sculpture: In coastal areas, due to its corrosion resistance.
Brewing: Used in beer brewing equipment.
Food processing: Used in food processing equipment.
Bridges: Used in bridge structures because of their strength and corrosion resistance.
Tension system: A structural system used to maintain tension.
Nuclear reprocessing: Used in the nuclear industry to dispose of radioactive materials.
Tunnel infrastructure: Structures used in tunnel construction.
Chemical carriers: Used to create ship structures that are resistant to chemical corrosion.
2205 duplex stainless steel is ideal for more challenging environments.
