S31254 (254 SMO) is a high-performance super-austenitic stainless steel with exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (especially in chloride-containing environments). It is a top-tier material choice for applications such as desalination, harsh chemical environments, and flue gas desulfurization.
High Corrosion Resistance:
Chemical Composition: High molybdenum (~6%), high chromium (~20%), and moderate nitrogen (~0.2%). Molybdenum is a key element for enhancing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
High Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN): %Cr + 3.3 x %Mo + 16 x %N ≈ 43. A higher PREN value indicates greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, far exceeding that of standard 316 stainless steel (PREN ~25) and duplex stainless steel 2205 (PREN ~35).
Excellent General Corrosion Resistance: Excellent performance in most strong acids (such as sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic), organic acids, and chloride-containing environments.
Outstanding resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking: It is more suitable than standard austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 and 316) and some duplex stainless steels in high-temperature, high-concentration chloride environments (such as seawater, salt spray, and chemical processes).
Seawater corrosion resistance: It is an ideal choice for applications such as seawater treatment (desalination, cooling systems), ships, and offshore platforms.
Excellent mechanical properties:
