316L (UNS S31603) is an ultra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel (carbon content ≤0.03%), which significantly enhances the resistance to intergranular corrosion on the basis of the general-purpose 316 stainless steel. This material has good formability, weldability (no need for heat treatment after welding) and low-temperature toughness, but its strength is medium (which can be improved through cold working), and long-term exposure above 600℃ may cause embrittlement due to the precipitation of σ phase.
It is mainly applied in medium to severe corrosive environments. Typical fields include: chemical and petrochemical industries; Marine engineering Biomedical Food and pharmaceuticals . Its balanced corrosion resistance, ease of processing and relatively low cost make it one of the preferred industrial materials for resisting chloride corrosion, meeting hygiene requirements and ensuring welding reliability, especially irreplaceable in critical scenarios where intergranular corrosion needs to be suppressed.
