S32205 is a standard duplex stainless steel with excellent performance and wide application. It successfully balances high strength with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly resistance to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking. In marine environments, oil and gas, chemical processing, and energy, where high corrosion and high strength are common, S32205 is an ideal alternative to traditional austenitic stainless steels and more expensive alloys.
Resistance to Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: PREN values typically range from 34 to 39, significantly higher than those of 316L (PREN ~25) and 317L (PREN ~30), and exceeding some super-austenitic stainless steels such as 904L. Excellent performance in environments containing chloride ions (seawater, brine, bleach, and chemical treatment fluids).
Resistant to stress corrosion cracking: Extremely resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, a primary weakness of common austenitic stainless steels. This makes S32205 an ideal choice for heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and piping in high-temperature environments containing chloride.
High strength of S32205 duplex stainless steel: Yield strength is twice that of austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 and 316).
