316L (UNS S31603) is an ultra-low carbon molybdenum-reinforced austenitic stainless steel, with its core advantage lying in its excellent corrosion resistance. Its composition is based on 304 stainless steel with 2-3% molybdenum added, significantly enhancing its resistance to chlorides, seawater and various organic/inorganic acids.
Mainly applied in highly corrosive environments: chemical equipment; Marine engineering Medical implants; Food and pharmaceuticals Energy; Architecture. Its balanced corrosion resistance, machinability and cost make it the preferred choice for general-purpose corrosion-resistant stainless steel in chloride ion environments, but higher-grade alloys need to be selected for high-temperature environments with high concentrations of chlorides.
